Bliss/Philips Bikini Perfect

I can’t believe I didn’t think of mentioning this product yesterday! The Bliss/Philips Bikini Perfect Deluxe Spa Edition is the absolute PERFECT solution to keep fuzz at bay between waxings. It’s cordless, re-chargeable, and SHOWER FRIENDLY! It’s everything I dreamed of and more from a trimmer.

bliss-philips-bikini-perfect

When I got my paws on one last year, I was amazed at all the different features the trimmer has. Not to mention, it fits perfectly in the size of a woman’s hand. I have very petite fingers and anything bulky just would not do! This little gem is has six different attachments for all your hair removal needs:
•Precision Trimmer perfectly grooms bikini line with precision and comfort.
•Precision Comb ensures even grooming results. Adjusts to 5 length settings.
•Eyebrow Comb trims entire eyebrow to a uniform length.
•Micro Trimmer shapes and defines eyebrows or removes a single hair.
•Micro Shaver extra smooth & safe with hypo-allergenic foil.
•Epilator removes hair by the root for smooth skin for weeks.

My favorite attachment is the epilator-the lovely Miss Donna suggested using it to remove hair from the under arm. I thought she was crazy. “You want me to do WHAT with this thing to my delicate lady pits!?” but two days later, there I was in my bedroom epilating my underarms and singing Donna’s praises because I didn’t have to shave for the next 3 weeks. If you can handle cramps, childbirth, or a bikini wax, you can epilate. This is not the same as the 1980’s torture device that will remain nameless *cough cough* Epilady.

The trimmer came in so handy when I went on vacation, too. I went on a sun & fun vacation and brought the trimmer with me, which was great because it’s travel-friendly. Just put the trimmer, charger and heads you’ll need into its cute little Bliss bag and you’re good to go! If you buy the Bliss/Philips Bikini Perfect Deluxe Spa Edition you’ll also receive try-me sizes of bliss lemon+sage body butter (1oz), bliss lemon+sage body scrub (1oz), and 5 bliss ingrown hair eliminating peeling pads, which are great travel companions.

How to Wax Poetic at Home

I have a co-worker whose first hair removal experience was at the age of 9 when her particularly precocious best friend pressed duct tape on her pre-pubescent leg hair, then ripped it off! This primitive practice DID remove hair, and proved to be an excruciating shock to my colleague, who at the time was a bit of a Tomboy and didn’t really care if her legs were hairy.

These days, hair removal is ‘de rigueur’ for most beauty mavens. The smoother and more hairless the better… legs, under arms, fore arms, bikini area. Professional waxing at salons and spas is the modern method of choice, I think because it is easier to pay someone else to inflict discomfort, rather than do so yourself. The first time I had a Brazilian (ie take it all off down there), I went to a neighborhood salon in my Brooklyn neighborhood and the waxing professional told me that when she gets a Brazilian (add Eastern European accent here) her “pants feel too big after!” She also told me, “shut up and enjoy your pain.” Not kidding.

Good news for do-it-yourselfers: you can wax at home!!!
Poetic Waxing Kit is the same wax used in the bliss spa treatment rooms. Because it is a low heat wax that ‘shrink wraps’ the hair without sticking to the skin, Poetic Wax offers a very comfortable waxing experience, even for those with sensitive skin. Poetic Wax is a hard wax, which means the wax becomes the strip… no cloth strips needed… making it a fast, quick and easy way to remove hair. The kit contains: a mug of Poetic Wax, assorted spatulas for applying the wax, pre waxing cleanser, pre and post waxing lotion.

Here’s how it works (please read and follow the instructions in the Poetic Waxing Kit):
1. Set the cup of poetic wax in a pan on the stove with water (about half way up the cup), heat pan until water simmers and wax melts.

2. Remove pan from stove. Allow wax to cool to the consistency of thick honey; temperature should be comfortable to the touch.

3. Cleanse the area to be waxed with the pre-waxing cleanser. Thoroughly dry skin, then apply pre- and post- waxing oil.

4. Using the spatula size of choice (large or small, depending on where you are waxing), apply wax in the direction of hair growth, in a layer the thickness of a banana peel, then allow to harden until it feels like laffy taffy.

5. To remove wax, pull against the hair growth with a motion parallel to the skin surface. I recommend flicking at the end of the wax strip with your fingers to create a place to grab; make sure you are removing wax against hair growth.

6. When you are finished waxing, clean the area and apply the pre- and post- waxing lotion to soothe and calm.

Where can I use Poetic Wax?
Great for upper lip, brows. Great for fore arms, under arms. Legs will take a long time and use a lot of wax; I recommend a spa visit.

How ‘bout a do-it-yourself Brazilian?
If you are brave and bendy, theoretically you can do a Brazilian with Poetic Wax. I highly recommend visiting a professional for this service. Do you really want to yank-out hair down there on your own? If the answer is “yes, absolutely!”, please see a mental health provider and/or practice your waxing skills on an area such as legs, before approaching your nether region. If you must do this yourself, use small strips of wax! Do not ever apply wax to the entire bikini area all at once or you will end up with a hard, blue, wax helmet that is very difficult to remove. Really, a spa visit is sooooo much easier!

Can I use the wax leftover in the cup?
Sure, let the wax harden, cover with foil or plastic wrap and store until next time.

Do you have waxing questions? Please ask… I will answer! bliss kisses, Donna

The hair on your head…

I’ve been spending a lot of time talking about hair in the southern hemisphere. I’m going to bring it up past the equator for a minute and talk about the hair in the northern hemisphere. For you directionally challenged beauties out there, it’s the hair on your head!

My hair and I have a love/hate relationship. I was born with extremely curly hair. One particularly humid April day in 10th grade history class, a you boy we’ll call T. turned around and said “Hey Frizzy Poodle!”
poodle

I went home and begged my mom to let me get my hair straightened. She said no. Two years later, I went off to college. My first weekend in Boston was spent at the salon getting my hair chemically straightened and retired the nickname Frizzy Poodle for good.

Beauty definitely comes with a price-my hair is extremely damaged: I chemically straighten, I blow dry, sometimes I flat iron, and I am an avid swimmer.

Chemicals + heat+ more chemicals=dry, damaged hair. Ojon is my hair’s BFF. I use this mask once a week. I usually leave it in for about an hour and clean my apartment while the mask does its work. My hair is soft, shiny. Since I started using this mask, I noticed that I don’t get as many split ends of flyaways. Ojon gets an A+ in my book!

I am also addicted to Alterna shampoo and conditioner. They’re pricey, but so worth it. Alterna’s claim to fame is their Enzymetherapy – The Science of Skincare, African Cacao, Hyaluronic Acid, Caviar Age-Control Complex™, Photozyme Complex™ with Color Hold™, Italian White Truffle, French Champagne Quality Grape Seed Oil, Bulgarian Evening Primrose, Moroccan Quillaia Bark, Arnica Flower.

The trifecta of Ojon and Alterna Ten Shampoo and Conditioner keeps my locks looking like a hairdo’ instead of a hairdon’t. They’re a bit of an investment, but I no longer need a trim every 6 weeks. I go once ever 4 months now because my hair is so much healthier. I’m hooked for life! Goodbye, Poodle. Hello, beautiful!

Welcome to Bliss Beauty Blog!

The ‘blissing’ link

“Why another beauty blog?” you ask. There are plenty of beauty blogs, but no ‘spa-thority’ voice on the internet. Bliss is a spa and skincare company. We use our products in our treatments, so we know they work because we use them on hundreds of lovelies like you every day. When you buy a Bliss product you’re bringing home a piece of our spa (sans the expert technician).

‘Bliss’ and Tell

We believe that secrets don’t make friends. We want to ‘bliss’ and tell so you can look ‘spa’-velous everyday from the inside out.

What to expect when the ‘spa-thorities’ get on the soapbox

We’d love to update this blog daily Mon-Fri. If we go ‘bliss’-ing in action, don’t be alarmed-we’re just working on updating our expert ‘spa’-mmentary so you get the full beauty brief. Without further ado, I would love to tell you a little about myself…..

Meet the Author

Thanks for stopping by! My name is Karen Glidden and I’m the web content coordinator for Bliss. I will be the primary author of Bliss n Tell. For all your beautification needs, please refer to blissworld.com

My background is not beauty related at all. I graduated from Boston University and worked at Starbucks for many years climbing their corporate ladder. Pre-Bliss, my idea of a milky cleanser was the residue left on my face after making cappuccinos all day. I’ve been with Bliss for just over a year now and have been converted into a product worshipper. I’m the MacGyver of skincare. I love inventing new uses to beauty products. You’ll find me putting toner on my legs to help with dry skin, wearing my glamour gloves on the subway to smooth my hands, and using skincare in my hair to tame flyaways. Oh, did I mention that I’m totally frugal. Yes, this little Bliss girl is a ‘recessionista’ for sure.

My skin type is normal. I’m not particularly breakout prone unless it’s stress related or hormonal. I’m not too oily, but sometimes dry all over depending on the weather. I’ve got an even skin tone and not too many fine lines, wrinkles, or hyperpigmentation. I have some sun damage from years of sun-worshipping sans SPF, my greatest skincare regret in life. My biggest skin concern are fine lines/wrinkles around my eyes and laugh lines around my mouth. Oh, and some uh….cellulite on my bum/thighs. Yes, I am human (you can stop pointing and laughing now, thanks!).

My Favorite Bliss Product: I can’t choose just one. It’s a tie between Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Mask and A Tan For All Seasons

Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Mask is my five minute beauty fix for just about everything (breakouts, dull/tired skin, dryness). A Tan For All Seasons is my best friend. It’s a stink-free tan in a can. I cannot live without a sun-kissed glow all year (without the UV damage, of course!)

Spreading the bliss

Please feel free to post questions and comments on this blog. We look forward to hearing from you! Oh, and don’t forget to subscribe to Bliss Beaut-e-mail for special offers on products and spa treatments! See you soon!
